Chirac must be treated like an ordinary citizen
Joëlle Meskens is the Belgian daily's correspondant. She comments on the move to place Jacques Chirac under formal investigation. "Although Jacques Chirac denies any personal enrichment, the allegations are serious. They call into question the very integrity of the former Paris mayor. They cast serious doubt on the mission which he claims to have accomplished for the sole well-being of his constituents, and they tarnish the political craft itself. The end (the conquest of political power) does not justify all means (the casual use of public funds at a time when political party funding was not controlled). Yet Jacques Chirac, now an ordinary citizen, must be calmly treated like one in this case. No political gain should be sought, either by struggling left-wing parties nor by the right wing anxious to legitimise its break with the past."
