Zafer Senocak says Europe should incorporate Turkey
Turkey, in originating an Islam that is open to modernity, has created a key role for itself, thinks author Zafer Senocak. "Can Muslim civilization regenerate and not be a counterpart but rather an integral part of western civilization? Muslims who would like to see Turkey incorporated into Europe say yes. Not everything they do but some of it – in culture and politics – is moving in this direction, confirming Turkey's ambition. Given these circumstances, the west, and Europe in particular, should take a closer look and pose critical questions. The contradictions must be understood, because they reflect reality better than do clearly defined and disconnected positions. But what is the purpose of a policy that puts all its energy into keeping Turkey at arm's length?"
