Kostunica blocks agreement between Serbia and the EU

"The enthusiasm in Brussels was premature. And people underestimated Vojislav Kostunica's abilities as an outstanding technologist of power", Andrej Ivanji believes. "Using the instruments of power available to him as prime minister, he can block the government and control the parliament with the nationalist opposition at the same time. Kostunica will not permit Tadic to translate his enormous popularity after the presidential elections into political successes. For unlike Tadic, Kostunica is not prepared to forgive the EU for 'carving up' Serbia. ... Kostunica can de facto disempower the pro-western forces in parliament and form a government of 'national redemption' with the EU-sceptical opposition – and without new elections. Tadic would have no legal means to challenge such a government which would lead Serbia straight into its deepest political crisis since the transformation in 2000."
