Romania's stray dogs
In the Romanian seaport of Constanta a little girl was mauled to death by stray dogs. Ion Vianu writes about the phenomenon of wild dogs in Romania: "I have been in many countries in Europe and America, Asia and Africa. In underdeveloped countries I would see two or three stray dogs wandering around the streets. In the EU I saw none. Nowhere else is the situation as bad as it is here. The street dogs are a legacy of socialism. The large-scale demolition of houses and the thousands of people who had to leave their homes within three days left behind these hoards of dogs. They have multiplied and learned to survive in our urban jungle and cross the road when the light goes green."
