The battle between Christianity and Islam

"Pope Benedict XVI's appeal for the European Catholic church to make Africa a priority is fundamentally linked to the current battle between civilisations, between the values of christianity and those of Islam," writes columnist José Manuel Barroso. "With support from Islamic states, a growing number of missionaries of Muhammad's faith are settling in the urban regions and most impoverished areas of Africa's large cities, in search of new followers and, clearly, new fighters. ... Independent of each person's views about religion, it is indisputable that the roots of our society's essential values lie in christianity. Europe's fight for its values - which, while not signaling a war of civilisations, does not prevent a clash of civlisations - is vital in order to preserve these values."
