Right to freedom of expression

An article critical of Islam written by Belgian writer Geert van Istendael has sparked a wave of indignation, particularly among Muslims. The daily De Standaard argues in favour of freedom of expression: "Muslims are not being systematically persecuted here and they are certainly not being murdered. They receive exactly the same protection from the state as everyone else. ... It is the critics of Islam who must live with the fear of being stabbed in the stomach. It is the critics of Islam who are forced to go into hiding and who need protection. The fear of violence from Muslims has created a worrying self-censorship. It must be possible to conduct unhindered democratic debate within our democratic system. This includes [the right to] attack sacred cows. It applies to the Church in Rome, the royal family, the people's representatives and all institutions. Why should it not apply to Islam? The flood of abuse directed at van Istendael seems to confirm his views. Not only must our democratic rights be adjusted to encompass Islam, Islam must live with freedom of expression."
