The bad French example
Spanish journalist Manuel Martín Ferrand analyses the consequences of the withdrawal of the First Employment Contract (CPE) in France. "Jacques Chirac, more vacant than solemn, and his prime minister Dominique de Villepin, more rancid than effective, have provoked a harmful episode for their country that could serve as a bracing example for our own and, by extension, for all of Europe. There exists no other democratic country in which the State is so bereft of strength, presence and creative ability. All of this materially and spiritually impoverishes a nation which, beyond being the epicentre of the Continent, was for centuries a source of culture, subtlety, a courteous reserve and a beacon of thought. ... The State and the government have yielded in the face of disorder, and France will pay dearly for this. We are not immune from being infected."
