The consequences of Chernobyl

"The anniversary of the Chernobyl tragedy comes at a time when the EU's attitude towards nuclear power is changing," writes Radek Honzak. "It is increasingly seen as an answer to the energy demands of the future. However, owing to people's fears after Chernobyl, most member states have not actually dared to say this aloud in Brussels. According to the most recent survey, only 12 percent of Europeans support the construction of new nuclear power stations, while more than half of them firmly oppose it. European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso says there should be no taboos in the debate about energy sources. But because some EU countries still oppose nuclear power, the Commission is leaving the issue in the hands of the individual states. It will be a while before the EU can reach agreement on a joint stance regarding nuclear power."
