Finland and the European constitution
The Finnish parliament plans to ratify the European constitution. People in Finland are now discussing whether this is a good idea. In a survey conducted by the Sunday paper "Sunnuntaisuomalainen", 57 percent of respondents wanted a referendum before the parliament decides the issue. Stig Nygard comments: "Last summer, the draft failed in referendums in France and the Netherlands. The French and the Dutch rejected the constitution because those responsible failed to make its content clear and understandable. Those responsible within the EU were forced to realise that it's not enough to have the EU's political elite on your side; you also need the support of the people."
