Peter Handke stirs controversy
Joseph Hanimann says all the fuss about Peter Handke is exaggerated – in particular the withdrawal of his play by Marcel Bozonnet, director of the Comedie-Francaise, from this season's programme. "This is the first time an author has been punished for his political leanings with the withdrawal of a play which, Bozonnet himself admits, does not contain anything reprehensible... The director could have chosen a much easier solution instead of letting his temper get the better of him: he could have simply called Handke and clarified the situation. Nowadays, however, indignation apparently takes precedence over clarification where intellectual matters are concerned."
