Guantánamo closure decisive for the future of the Transatlantic Alliance
The daily Le Temps writes that Guantánamo will be decisive for the future of transatlantic relations: "The common values of the United States and the European Union and our renewed confidence in the rule of law will be demonstrated tomorrow in this legal black hole invented by the Bush administration. ... The obligation to help its ally to close one of the darkest chapters of its recent history provides Europeans with a valuable lesson. ... The closure of the Cuban jail will confront the EU leaders who yesterday joined Washington in its adventurous military undertakings and bring home to them the failure of their mistaken policy. ... With the closure of this trap, a holdover of the Bush years, ... Europe will be able to recover that crucial quality: the will to fight the sworn enemies of our democracy, but not at any cost."
