David Černý's unimaginative associations

The daily Postimees is outraged by the Czech sculptor David Černý's artwork "Entropa", which depicts Bulgaria as a toilet and Estonia as a hammer and sickle: "Art can and must sometimes be provocative and shocking. But is offending another nation with imprecise and unimaginative images the best way to do this? One is left with the impression that Černý's ambitions were greater than his powers of imagination or his intellect, and that he simply used a few loose associations from politics and history. But this is typical of many contemporary artists who want to intervene but in reality don't know anything about society and therefore are in no position to instruct it."
