Nuclear power boosts national pride
The Bulgarian parliament has approved restarting two additional reactors in Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant. Dnevnik newspaper comments: "Bulgarians are revitalised just hearing the words energy sector. Our attitude to energy is like that of the Saudis: energy gushes from a source and we harness and export it. But even if unlike the Saudis we cannot be the world's source of power, at least we provide energy to the Balkans. ... For this reason exporting energy to Turkey is not an economic but a political vision for Bulgarians. Of course we'd never do it, but just the thought of cutting off their power supply brings a smile of satisfaction to our lips. ... It's simple: for us energy policy has nothing to do with the reasonable use of energy, but with national pride. And that rests on three economic pillars: nuclear power plants, Russian gas supplies and the budget surplus. When these support us firmly, we are happy and calm."
