Protectionism creates difficulties for everyone
The liberal daily Gazeta Wyborcza calls on the prime ministers of Poland and the Czech Republic to fight the nascent protectionism in Europe tooth and nail: "Once more the spectre of protectionism is seeking to rise from its grave - roused by several irresponsible politicians, first and foremost President Nicolas Sarkozy. He has intimated that state loans for French car makers should go hand in hand with the closure of plants in other EU countries and their relocation to France. The Czech leadership of the EU wants to call a special summit meeting for the end of February to oblige the remaining EU states to refrain from economic protectionism. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk should give his firm support to his Czech colleague Mirek Topolanek. If the Czech plan is unsuccessful we could all face considerable difficulties."
