The EU-Latin America summit in Vienna
Wolfgang Greber sees indifference and tunnel vision in Europe's attitude towards Latin America. "Latin America's economic potential is being overlooked. After years of recession, the economy grew by 4.2 percent in 2005. The economic crises in Argentina, Peru and Uruguay have taken a turn for the better and Chile is thriving. One reason for this is China's hunger for raw materials, from copper to sea creatures to petroleum. According to economists, European companies could profit from China's demand for raw materials by investing in Latin America... And Latin America would also be a good partner from a geopolitical point of view: as far as multilateralism and a moderate stance are concerned, it's much closer to Europe than to the US."
