The dispute over natural resources

A while ago Romania was granted an area rich in natural resources in a territorial dispute with Ukraine. In 2008 and without waiting for the ruling on the dispute the Romanian government had already promised these resources to foreign companies that work closely with Romanian energy and media moguls. The daily Revista 22 comments: "This entire process indicates that Romania still has plenty of mineral resources to be plundered. As long as it is waged by mercenaries the war between the clans that is dividing the country appears to be harmless for Romania's future. But this has not been the case so far. I was eyewitness to other wars between oligarchies in Russia in 1997 and 1999. The results are extraordinary. Against a backdrop of generalised corruption, lacking genuine reform, judicial crisis and a profound moral crisis these wars have compromised capitalism as well as the political and economic elites and the media in their entirety."
