Wolf Lepenies on Latino power for Europe
Following the recent protests by Latin-American immigrants (mostly Mexicans) in the US, Wolf Lepenies holds them up as a shining example to the world: "'Latino power' is an impressive reaction to the challenges of globalisation. In the end, both the immigrants and their new mother country will profit from this trend. The 'Latinos' want to become Americans and remain Mexican at the same time. The Mexican government is encouraging them to do this. Mexican authorities don't want to hear anything about 'illegal' persons basically having to give up their Mexican citizenship to obtain American citizenship: the secret rule is 'no lo digas!' ('don't tell me!'). In actual fact, neither the US nor Mexico officially recognise dual nationality."
