Emigration belongs on the stage

A theatre in Bucharest has staged a play about emigration in which a youth from Moldova in Romania is smuggled into Ireland in a container. In view of the Italian protests against Romanians the issue is more topical than ever, Gândul newspaper writes: "How many Romanians have chosen this or other paths in search of a better life? The risks are huge and can have a dramatic ending. … These are not pretty truths and perhaps we don't want to hear them, particularly if the illegal immigrants are confronted with even more difficulties when they reach the place of their dreams. … What do we know of the Romanians who have left? The news tells us that at Easter and Christmas they fill the crossing points, that they send millions of euros home and help the economy of a country that offers them no support in return. Of course, some Romanians become criminals and trigger waves of hatred – as happened in Italy. The time may have come for us to use theatre … to find out more about them. And for us to do something about it before we suddenly realise that in the quest for a better life the whole country has ended up inside a container."
