German bishops should criticise the Pope
German bishops now meeting at their spring session should criticise the Pope for reincommunicating several members of the Society of St. Pius X, writes the Süddeutsche Zeitung: "Yes, mistakes have been made. Yes, the Catholic Church must defend religious freedom and engage in ecumenical dialogue. It cannot relinquish its opening up to the world in exchange for a sectarian understanding of tradition. That is too problematic, but it also harbours possibilities. It has been a long time since Catholics and non-Catholics engaged in such fruitful discussion over a Council that happened 40 years ago and whose decisions threatened to sink into oblivion. It has been a long time since Jews and Christians talked this seriously about the anti-Semitic traditions in the Churches. And seldom was it as clear as it is now that what the Society of St. Pius propagates as the sole true faith has no place in the Catholic Church, and that the Pope's real mistake was not to have been clear enough on this point."
