Fight dim prospects with democratic convictions
The business paper Capital expresses concern over the political effects of the economic crisis: "The current crisis spread after the investment bank Lehman Brothers went bankrupt, and the authorities in America already regret letting that happen. ... But will there be enough money to rescue all the banks and all the companies that need help? The effects of the crisis will be long-lasting. There will be a rise in violence, as can already be seen around the world. If the current democratic governments do not adopt resolute measures, extremist politicians could emerge who will promise to fight the violence and the crisis with non-democratic means. That is always how things are in times of crisis, and that's how Hitler came to power. In these hard times, governments must quench the masses' thirst for protection with democratic convictions."
