Mediation dilemma in border dispute
Croatia will accept the European Commission's proposal to mediate in the border dispute with Slovenia today, with Martti Ahtisaari leading the negotiations, the daily Delo writes. The dilemma over the modalities of the mediation between the two countries however remains unresolved. "It is well-known that Croatia is happy to accept the intervention of any authority provided it's a judicial authority, whereas Slovenia favours a diplomatic solution. So we're back to the eternal dilemma. Despite both sides having agreed in principle to mediation they still have to agree on the modality, and according to both parliaments there is less room for manoeuvre than ever before. [EU enlargement commissioner] Olli Rehn … has warned both countries not to set conditions that are impossible to fulfil. In the next few days Rehn will meet the Slovenian and Croatian foreign ministers again and it could well be that he is then faced with precisely those 'impossible conditions'."
