Spring of discontent
For the left-liberal daily La Repubblica the strikes and demonstrations in France symbolise a wave of protest that is sweeping through Europe. "France is suffering less than other countries from the effects of the breakdown of global finance. There are protests in other countries, too, but in France there are mass demonstrations. Here the squares and boulevards provide a first-class political stage. Here when the going gets tough the citizens turn to the powers that be, the state, the Republic. … What has made the French angry are the enormous incomes of the bank directors and financial institutes that have caused the crisis. … The public can't understand why the lion's share of [state] funding is reserved for banks and companies."
