Benedict XVI in Poland
Editorialist and writer Marco Politi comments on the speech delivered by the Pope during his visit to the Auschwitz concentration camp. "From the heart of darkness Benedict XVI launched a harrowing question: where was God at Auschwitz? A dramatic inquiry that the German pontiff confronts with his unique mix of intellectual strength and finesse. ... At Auschwitz, a place that symbolises the Holocaust ..., the Pope did not speak about antisemitism, which has however seeped like poison through centuries of History ... But to what extent can Ratzinger allow himself to put aside the question of Christian anti-judaism which fed hatred and culminated in the final solution? It would be a mistake, when talking about someone of Ratzinger's intellect, to simplify his words. We would do him a disservice by ignoring the nuances of his speeches, but also by ignoring his omissions."
