Fico attacks freedom of expression
Prime Minister Robert Fico of Slovakia has described the victory of current president Ivan Gašparovič in the presidential elections as a defeat for the media and once again accused them of adopting an oppositional stance to the government. The left-leaning daily Pravda protests: "Fico is in power; his government bears the responsibility. Who are the media supposed to be watching? Whose steps should it be following? Who, if not the government, should it be criticising? Fico lives from tax money and the taxpayers have a right to know what happens to their money. … Fico hasn't just attacked the media, he has made an unprecedented attack on the right to freedom of expression. It's quite possible that we may witness the banning of newspapers, television and radio stations that don't conform with the reality as Fico perceives it."
