Giving Moldovans Romanian citizenship is a boon for the EU
Romania wants to ease the naturalisation process for the Romanian majority in the Republic of Moldova. Up to one million Moldovans are already said to have applied for Romanian citizenship. Commenting in the daily Cotidianul, Romanian writer Liviu Antonesei calls this a boon for the EU: "Romania has asked neither the EU nor the other international forums to annul the consequences of the Hitler-Stalin pact, that is it has not sought a reunification. Neither has it made any attempt to protect these people with military aid. Instead it has proposed an individual solution to protect around a million people from the grips of a criminal regime. These one million people will become European citizens. I believe that Old Europe should see this not as a loss, but above all as a boon, including in demographic terms."
