Great achievements in Romanian cinema

The two dailies the Financial Times and the New York Times have praised the film "Police, Adjective" by Romanian director Corneliu Porumboiu currently on show at the Cannes film festival as a masterpiece. The daily Cotidianul seizes the occasion to extol Romanian cinema: "It is becoming quite clear that the most important event of the 20 years since our separation from communism has been the birth of this sensational generation of filmmakers who prove that Romania has more to show the world than children who had to go to orphanages straight after the revolution or rapists or embarrassing politicians who never fail to disappoint. … As we can see, the Romanian film industry had good films and great directors and actors in the past, but it wasn't a mass phenomenon. … And it is astounding that it is happening now when one considers that the budgets on which our screenwriters work are small. … But film triumphs over life."
