Opel takeover by Fiat unlikely
The left-liberal daily La Repubblica predicts that Germany will speak out against a takeover of Opel by Fiat. In an interview he gave on the weekend the German Minister for Economic Affairs, Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg, assessed several takeover offers and mentioned that of Fiat last: "For the Germans even the euro was a huge psychological sacrifice: the payment Kohl made to Europe to compensate for the horrors of National Socialism. And for those who were accustomed to the German mark it was a penalty to have to share a currency with the irresponsible and sloppy Italians with their weak lira. The idea that of all people the Italians could become the owners of the glorious Opel brand must really be too much for the establishment in Berlin."
