The West must be more resolute in Moldova
The Republic of Moldova must elect a new parliament by the end of July after the parliamentary opposition has boycotted several attempts to elect a new president. Oleg Serebian, head of the Moldovan Institute for European Studies, formulates expectations of the West in an interview with the weekly magazine Revista 22: "Only after the results of April 7 [the day of the disputed parliamentary elections] did Brussels give a new assessment. I believe that the US also played a role in this respect. Compared with the Europeans it was much more reserved in its assessment of the achievements of 'Moldovan democracy'. In my opinion the West must be more resolute in making certain demands: a reduction of the barring clause from six to four percent, … the allowing of genuine election debates on TV and radio, the impartiality of the mass media and an amnesty for participants in the events [demonstrations against the communist government] of April 7."
