Peter Esterhazy pays hommage to Istvan Eörsi
Author Peter Esterhazy complains that Hungary no longer has passionate critics, and laments the passing in 2005 of author Istvan Eörsi. "Freedom was his most important word; authoritarian thinking (the lack of thought) his greatest enemy. When he sensed even a hint of authoritarianism, he attacked it mercilessly. Sometimes he was unjust, and he offended many people. But in a country where playing up to those in power, to the government, the authorities, the bosses, the kings, princes, counts and party bigwigs is a long-standing tradition, his sensitivity was as necessary as the air we breathe. He was unimpressed by high rank or (even well-earned) prestige. He just wanted to concentrate on 'the thing itself'."
