The loss of moral memory
The left-liberal daily La Repubblica complains that over the past few days the Italian state TV channels RAI and RAI 1 have not broadcasted even a single report on investigations into allegations that Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi held private parties with prostitutes and drugs: "In a country ruled by television, where politics is replaced by the images in the daily news programmes, this omission of information on a scandal is itself scandalous. …In a climate of temporary suspension of morals … there is the danger that the ethical loss of memory could become a genuine state of democratic and civil deficit. In the end the double standards - one for Berlusconi and the other for the people - will take their toll. The preconditions for subservience have already been created. The credibility of an entire system in its institutional dimension is seeping away. What remains is a preponderance of power and theatrics which has taken hold in the security born of impunity. Hypnotised by the dark shadow cast by the TV screen, we will be the ones to pay the high price."
