Italy no more than a caricature of democracy
The daily Dnevnik criticises the security laws passed last week by the Italian parliament. Introduced by Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, the laws tighten sanctions against illegal immigrants and legalise vigilante groups and private militias. "Now Berlusconi's government can finally do away with the last remnants of pity felt in Italy for these unlucky immigrants. Within the European Union Italy has become no more than a caricature of the much touted European freedoms, democracy and lasting social development. Italy is the example of an extreme political discourse in which migration has been reduced to questions of security, using it as an excuse to introduce policies with extremely negative consequences for all that has been accomplished in the way of human, political and social rights."
