Sabina Fati on Romania's frivolous female politicians
Writing for the daily Romania Libera Sabina Fati examines the differences between politicians in Romania and those in other parts of Europe: "Here in Romania women who want to make a career in politics generally have to be young, sexy and disciplined. In the West, and also in plenty of eastern democracies where women are increasingly occupying top government posts promotion tends to be more dependent on performance. … Here the female politicians who are 'in' at the moment wear pink, huge heels, skirts above the knees and handbags worth several thousand euros. Over there women in important positions wear dark colours, discreet jewellery and relatively comfortable footwear. Here it's the makeup that counts, there it's the background. Here the parliamentary president is a former Miss Romania. There female politicians come from less frivolous circles."
