Equality for Roma must follow ban on Hungarian Guard

After a long process a Hungarian court of appeal in Budapest has banned the right-wing radical "Hungarian Guard." The conservative daily Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung believes this was necessary: "The behaviour of the 'Guard' and the fact that it was tolerated for so long have threatened the cohesion of the people of Hungary - in other words all citizens living in Hungary - as well as the consensus of the Hungarian nation, including all Hungarian-speaking minorities living beyond its borders, and has damaged the country's international reputation. Hungary has a population of more than ten million, but not even nine tenths of them are Magyars in the ethnic sense. Alongside a dozen other minorities - such as Germans, Jews and Bulgarians - more than six percent of Hungarian citizens are gypsies [Roma]. ... What is important is equality in day-care centres, schools and universities, equal treatment in the private sector and in public administration, and equal pay and equal career opportunities for equal performance, regardless of skin colour."
