The neglected Romanian cultural heritage
Writing in the daily Gândul Cristina Modreanu finds it odd that Minister of Culture Theodor Paleologu has now decided to compile an inventory of Romania's destroyed cultural heritage when the extent of the destruction is already well known: "Twenty years ago a regime was finally replaced that had carried out the systematic destruction of monuments. It had torn down churches and palaces and turned over the capital's old centre to a few barbarians. After the change of regime there followed [another] 20 years of less organised destruction of the cultural heritage (in some cases steered by the interests of property speculators, but at least not the consequence of official policy). ... Last month I had the opportunity to admire with what stubborn determination the Americans do everything to preserve the cultural heritage of the first houses built by immigrants after1620 on the new earth of New England [the first area of settlement in the northeastern United States]. And the French have been persistent in preserving their historical traces for centuries."
