The search for a vaccine
The left-liberal daily La Repubblica speculates on the production of a vaccine against the H1Ni virus: "Perhaps in the end there won't be a pandemic. Perhaps the vaccine will come too late. But the money is already flowing into the pockets of the major pharmaceuticals who have been summoned to find the antidote post haste. This is a deal worth around 10 billion dollars: fear knows no recession. … But despite the huge amount of effort [being put into research] there is still no certainty about when the vaccine will be available. There is a faster method [than the antigen method]: the direct production of the vaccine using cell cultures. This approach has already been used for other vaccines, but has not been authorised for [swine] flu. The urgency of the matter could now force those in charge to speed up the authorisation."
