University degree dumping
The daily România Liberă criticises the quality of Romanian university degrees: "The university dumping began back in the early 1990s. Taking a pragmatic approach many students with low incomes … tried to obtain university degrees with as little effort as possible. So it's not surprising that the number of private universities mushroomed. Today there are 56 state-run universities in Romania … and 55 private ones. … With around 320,000 students the 'Spriru Haret' university is by far the largest degree factory in the country. And its success is based on low prices. A price that can't guarantee the quality of its degree courses. To keep its finances on course it could … not afford to lose students from its ongoing operations. So once students had enrolled and fulfilled minimal requirements for the exams they had excellent prospects of obtaining a degree."
