Forming a coalition will be a tough proposition
Germany's parliamentary elections take place at the end of September. The French daily Le Temps predicts that The Left party will do well and believes next weekend's regional elections could signal the direction the parliamentary elections will take: "Germany's Social Democrats who are currently lagging in the polls are hoping that a first positive signal from Saarland and Thuringia will boost the motivation of its voters. They have a chance of returning to power in these regions by joining forces with a difficult partner, namely the radical Left bearing the label The Left. If The Left came to power in Saarland it would be a first for a state in western Germany that could set a precedent at a national level. With a fragmented party system and five parties in the Bundestag, the formation of any type of government will be a hard nut to crack. Germany will without doubt have to get used to the idea of accepting the ex-communists of the Left as governing partners one day."
