Europe's competitive efficiency

"Neelie Kroes, the European Competition Commissioner, and Viviane Reding, the Commissioner for Information Society and Media, are making headlines from Brussels," delights editorialist François-Xavier Pietri. "For the first time, Microsoft [slapped with a yet-to-be-determined fine] is in [Brussels'] sights for having abused its dominant position. As for mobile telephone operators, they will be required to put a ceiling on the cost of calls that travellers make in the European Union. ... Who said the European Commission just sits around idling the time away ? ... Contrary to what the backbiters suggest, Brussels is not broken down. But we are talking about a very particular type of activism - that involving competition - and which has a very particular focus - that of the consumers' well-being. This is not enough to support a revival of the Union. ...During this time, real subjects, such as energy, remain neglected."
