Solution to border dispute between Croatia and Slovenia in sight
Slovenia plans to stop blocking the EU's membership talks with Croatia if a compromise can be reached in the border dispute between the two countries. An EU arbitration tribunal is to rule on the dispute. The leftist daily Die Tageszeitung comments: "Both states must continue to seek a compromise in the border dispute before Croatia can join. And that's only appropriate, because despite all the unpleasant attending circumstances the Slovenian veto has quite rightly raised the question of whether or not other candidates should be made to resolve their bilateral disputes with neighbouring countries before joining. This would apply to Serbia, which still hasn't recognised the state of Kosovo. The smouldering Kosovo conflict could plunge Europe into a profound crisis. The alternative under discussion in Brussels of limiting the veto rights of certain member states won't help here. It would be better to proscribe peaceful solutions at a bilateral level."
