Merkel could go
The daily Delo plays through the different possible scenarios after Germany's federal elections: "The [social democratic] SPD can only remain in power if a conservative alliance [between the conservative CDU and the liberal FDP] fails to form a government and the centre-left block gets more MPs into the Bundestag. Since owing to the disagreements between the SPD and the populist The Left party a red-red-green coalition is out of the question, another grand coalition seems the most likely scenario. This would secure the chancellorship for Angela Merkel, but on the other hand her position would be anything but rosy. For it's unclear how long such an unnatural coalition could survive. Nor can we rule out that sooner or later the SPD and The Left come closer to each other. Moreover it will become clear that Angela Merkel's pragmatic politics, which have made her so popular, can't secure the party enough votes if they're not backed up by genuine conservative content. There's already speculation that in the event of another grand coalition Merkel will say farewell to her position as leader of the CDU."
