Climate change requires ambitious policy
The United Nations climate summit begins in New York today, Thursday, while the G20 summit will take place in Pittsburgh on Thursday and Friday. EU Commission President José Manuel Barroso comments on the twin summits in the daily La Tribune: "Climate change is taking place more quickly than we thought just two years ago. If we don't change our habits, we can be sure that dangerous, even catastrophic climate changes will take place within the century. This is the single most important challenge facing today's generation of decision makers. ... Now is not the time for playing poker. It is the time for putting forward proposals that are as ambitious as political constraints will allow. This is excactly what the European Union has always done, and what it will continue to do in the future."
