Brown failed to break the ice again

The left-liberal daily La Repubblica believes the British Prime Minister Gordon Brown failed in his attempt to save himself and his party with his speech at the Labour Party Conference: "He admits to being unable to give people the political spectacle they crave; he apparently concedes that after 13 years of Labour rule people want to see new faces in power. Yet he still insists that no one is better suited than he is to take care of the nation. … Once again Brown has failed to break the ice that stands between him and public opinion. By contrast his wife, the First Lady Sarah, has ... understood this. Open, uncomplicated, honest: this is the type of leader Labour needs. Perhaps it would take an American-style TV duel between the two candidates to make Gordon Brown more human in the eyes of the public and at least give him a chance to save his own future, as well as that of the country."
