Czech Republic could benefit from Klaus' obstruction tactics
Czech President Václav Klaus has promised the Swedish prime minister and current president of the EU Council Fredrik Reinfeldt he will sign the Lisbon Treaty if a non-specified footnote is added on the subject of human rights. The liberal daily Mladá Fronta Dnes points out that other countries have been able to negotiate things into the treaty. "It's silly to crucify Klaus, even if it's true that he shouldn't have waited until now because the ratification is an urgent matter. But is his approach really just counterproductive for the Czech Republic? … If the rest of the Czech politicians weren't good-for-nothings they could help Klaus to force the Union to hand over a very prestigious commissioner post, perhaps even that of vice-president. [Commission] President José Manuel Barroso would gladly give away a post in exchange for a speedy end to the ratification process. But someone [in Prague] must want it to happen."
