Klaus is doing his country a disservice
After Poland's President Lech Kaczyński signed the EU Reform Treaty of Lisbon on the weekend all Europe is now waiting for the signature of Czech head of state Václav Klaus. The latter is demanding a guarantee for the Beneš Decrees, on the basis of which the property of the Sudeten Germans was collectively confiscated after World War II. The left-wing daily Právo writes: "A purely political declarations would be merely a formality lacking legal validity. But should the demand become part of Lisbon the Treaty would have to be re-ratified by all remaining 26 countries. Does the Czech president think the leaders of these states are idiots? … If Klaus torpedoes Lisbon the Czech Republic will lose its influence in the EU. … Is Václav Klaus really prepared to do his country such a disservice?"
