Criticism of the Greek dockworkers' strike
In Piraeus, the largest port in Greece, 1,500 dockworkers have been on strike for two weeks in protest at a concession signed between the previous government and the Chinese shipping company Cosco. The conservative daily Kathimerini criticises the strike: "The unionists aren't trying to protect state property from the Chinese … as they maintain. They simply want to protect themselves from competition. … We must be aware of what the unionists in the harbour are trying to achieve. They aren't demanding that the government overhaul the agreement with Cosco but that it annul it altogether on the grounds that it's 'colonialist'. This term is … embarrassing for our country's political class. … Take one look at the payroll of the port workers and you'll see why they're fighting tooth and nail against this 'Chinese colonialism'."
