Lebanon after Cana

"Ten years ago, a similar tragedy killed a hundred Lebanese residents of the same village," recalls editorialist Jean-Jacques Roth. "This carnage had two consequences: in Israel, the defeat of the labour left in elections and the arrival in power of the hawk, Netanyahu; in Lebanon, the radicalisation of the Hizbullah Shiite movement, which has been a constant headache for Israel ever since. What will the fury, indignation and sadness provoked by the killing of children in Cana lead to this time around? ... The result of this is that peace in the region has been set back fifteen years. The same misleading Arab unity is being revived, in people's hearts, around the worst heralds of the peace cause. The moderates have lost their voice. A generation of terrorists will use the dead of Cana to justify their bombs. ... The sum total of crushed hopes is horrifying."
