EU oppresses trade unions
The Swedish labour court has ruled that Swedish trade unions must pay the Latvian construction company Laval compensation because they prevented the company from carrying out a contract in Sweden. The company cited a decision by the European Court of Justice for its case. For the daily Dala-Demokraten this is a slap in the face of those fighting wage-dumping: "The trade unions are being forced to back down. This is what we must conclude. EU membership means just what its opponents had feared. The single market takes priority over social aspects. If we had politicians with a bit of spunk, they would have demanded an exemption in the Lisbon Treaty for the collective wage agreement. But there was no one with any guts, only politicians with a heart that beats for the EU. So now we're left in a Europe that is merciless towards employees."
