Obama's nuclear negligence
The Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty, or Start 1, on reducing strategic nuclear weapens in the US and Russia expired last weekend. The online edition of the daily Dnevnik criticises the lack of effort on the part of US President and Nobel Peace Prize winner Barack Obama to honour his promise of introducing a new treaty before the expiry date: "This spring Obama set himself three goals: pursuing the reduction of nuclear weapons with a new Start agreement, ... setting a new starting point for the anticipated revision of the agreement on non-proliferation of nuclear weapons and the introduction of stricter controls for nuclear material and weapons. The fact that Obama is going to Oslo to pick up his Nobel Prize without an agreement with Russia ... is at the very least incriminating for his peace initiative. ... Both sides are announcing ... that the new agreement will be signed soon. But this almost imperceptible negligence on Obama's part gives us the feeling that little or nothing is taking place in more serious questions on nuclear armament and disarmament. And it also makes one fear that things may get completely out of hand."
