Hatred rules in Romania after the elections

Traian Băsescu's narrow election victory against his challenger Mircea Geoană in the Romanian presidential elections could lead to deep-seated social conflict, warns Grigore Cartianu in the daily Adevărul: "I'd been under the impression that the rift dividing the country was just a function of the electoral campaign: some people were ardently in favour of Băsescu's, and some were just as ardently against him. But for three days I've seen how this chasm between the two Romanias continues on new grounds: five million people are convinced Băsescu won fairly, the others swear the election was a fraud. The result is that - regardless for what reason - we are flaying each other alive. And at the same time we risk becoming a country of neurotics, unable to shake off the pall of scandal and unable to stop and reflect for as much as a second. ... But if we want to breathe freely we must be able to get along without feelings of hatred or revenge. Fanaticism is a misfortune that sickens everyone it touches."
