Cold wave demonstrates solidarity
More than 100 people have died from the cold across Europe. The icy weather provides grist in the mill to harbingers of catastrophe, writes the daily La Croix, but it also prepares the way for solidarity: "The practical fragility of our hyper-organised societies, which falter as soon as the slightest thing goes wrong, no longer needs to be demonstrated. But it is accompanied by a civic weakness which leads many to call everything into question as soon as things become the slightest bit disorganised. People are quick to express their impatience the minute anything changes. ... But this winter we are seeing more than just a very vocal series of complaints. For we have also seen very compelling demonstrations of solidarity. ... People's willingness to help and be there for one another shows how strong social ties remain, especially at a local level."
